I have many things to blog about but this will be my post for the day because of it's importance.
My girl Whitney and I had a conversation about Sonic and how much, if any you are supposed to tip. Do you just tell them to keep the change, even if it's 4 cents? Do they make at least minimum wage and the tip is extra cash? Or do they make waitress wages and rely on tips to get by. You can read about our more in depth conversation here.
Over the weekend, I did some research. I went to Sonic for a large diet coke. It is delicious. They have the best ice in the whole world. When "Lindsay" brought out my drink that was $1.79, I asked her. She told me.
The car hops at Sonic make more than waitress wages but less than minimum wage. They do rely on their tips to help make that amount up. You CANNOT add a tip on the debit/credit card machine attached to the menu. So, her suggestion was to either pay in cash and give a tip - even if it's just the change from a dollar - or pay by debit or credit but make sure you bring a little change to help a girl (or guy) out. I gave her $3.00.
So. Now you know.
You're welcome.

this is one of my pet peeves...I hate that people dont tip at sonic! Makes me crazy and in TExas? They only have to pay them 2.16 an hour which is waitress pay in this great state... makes me angry

Thank you for researching!
Again, thanks for researching! I have always wondered that...and now I am wondering why anyone would work at Sonic when most people don't tip and they make less than minimum wage...Yuck!
I will make sure to have a few extras when we go through there during Happy Hour..nothing beats a half priced tasty beverage!
Here in oklahoma, our carhops (at least in my town) make above minimum wage. So maybe it varies by location.
Good job there Tracy! Waitressing is hard (seriously hard) work. I tried it for a couple of weeks way back when I had energy and muscles and all I wanted was to go back to school so I could get an easier job.
People should tip at least 15% cash (why should we tip the government by making it traceable?) and if they are really good....go ahead and tip a bit more.
Thank you for figuring this out for us! I can now enjoy my large cherry vanilla Diet Coke even more knowing that I'm being a good tipper. :)
It depends on A) the state the Sonic is located in and B) whether or not the owner of the sonic chooses to pay carhops federal minimum wage or waitress wages (it also depends on the state whether or not they have that choice)...In oklahoma where I worked our owner was given the choice and he picked regular 7.25 min. wage thich means he can never change that and go back to waitress wage. I think i made that sound confusing, sorry. OH and happy hour really sucks b/c its hot & we get REALLY busy so thats when not getting tipped hurts us the most
One thing that does suck is when people get small orders so they think its ok not to tip, when we actually have to still take our time to walk out and deliver to you anyway...plus we are probably missing out on a big order inside we would be making more money on... but any tips are always appreciated, even if its a quarter!
