What the Favre?

Most of you know my deep love for Brett Favre. When I heard he was retiring, I cried. I watched his press conference and watched him cry. I cried.

My office has Brett stuff. I have many Sports Illustrated magazines with him on the cover, with articles about him. I have special edition magazines covering him and his career.

It helps that my mom lives about 45 minutes from Green Bay. She sends me every article about him in her local paper. My mom and stepdad treated us to a game in Green Bay two years ago and I got to seem the Man, the Myth, the Legend play. We had a tour of the stadium. Fantastic!

I've met Brett. Way back when we lived in Hawaii, Brett was just starting out and he was in the Pro Bowl. There is a flea market several days of the week in the parking lot of the Pro Bowl stadium (Rainbow Stadium, I believe it's called). I was preggers with Jake and pushing Cole in his stroller. My mom and I shopped around and waited for the players to come out. Here was young Favre. He sat on the hood of his rental car and signed autograph after autograph. Every other player signed a few and then left. He stayed. I was impressed. Thus my love for Brett was formed.

Later that night, my mom, the ex and I went out to dinner. Lo and behold, there was Brett and that girl he married :) at the Wyland studio buying a dolphin statue. Sigh.

13 years later and this man I adore decides he wants to come back. I understand. He loves football. He's passionate about football. It is his life. If you've ever watched him play, you get it. He throws tantrums when a play doesn't go well. A real tantrum. Laying on his stomach kicking and pounding his fists. He throws his players over his shoulders and runs around the field with them when a play goes well. He jumps into the end zone. Everyone in Packer Country loves him.

He left gracefully. Now he wants to come back, move Aaron Rodgers back to back up quarterback and play some more. Either that or be released to play for another team. Yeah, I don't think so. His time is up. He could walk into ESPN or Fox or anywhere and get a job commentating. He could coach. He is pissed that the Packers organization won't let him go or let him come back as starter. It's Aaron's time to try and shine. And I can't imagine him playing anywhere else. That is a slap in his fans faces.

I can't believe his wife and mama haven't told him to put on his big boy underroo's and buck up. There are lots of details going around. Just google him and read up. I just don't have time to go into it here. He says he was pushed into retirement that he didn't want yet. Maybe so, but he isn't meek and mild, he could have said no.

I don't want him to taint his legacy. I want him to be graceful. The Packers fans are his bread and butter and he's hurting them. Us. Maybe he'll google himself and read this blog.

I don't want to find a new hero. He is a legend and hot and a wonderful football player. But he is also very good to wish kids. He gives back.

He almost made me take down all of my Brett stuff. Almost. And he still might do it. I hope not. He is supposed to meet a wish kid this weekend. But we didn't know if Brett was going to show up. He wasn't answering phone calls and texts. He finally came through yesterday and said of course he'd be there to meet this little guy. That is why I didn't pack up his stuff in a box and take a road trip to Hattiesburg to drop it on his doorstep. I would have done it. Really. Boy, I hope not to have to make that trip.

Brett, what are you doing??
In some ways I feel for him...it's tough to let go of something you're so passionate about, it's hard to think that it's really over....BUT it's over and it is time for him to move on to something else.

He's a class act and a great guy. I'm so glad he's meeting with the Wish Kid.
Will you be there? I hope so. :)

Have a great weekend!
